Candle Magic as a Full Moon Ritual

There is something timeless and sacred about lighting a candle with intention. Across cultures and traditions, flame has always symbolized transformation, connection to spirit, and the power to carry prayers beyond the veil. Candle magic is the art of working with the energy of fire and focused intention—and when combined with the potent energy of the full moon, it becomes a powerful ritual of release and illumination.

I find candle magic to be one of the simplest and most powerful forms of ritual. It allows you to anchor your intentions into the physical realm. When you light a candle with purpose, you're signaling to the universe (and to your subconscious) that you're ready to align with change.

The full moon is a time of culmination, celebration, and also deep release. Energetically, it shines a bright light on what is ready to be let go—and what is asking to be honored. Pairing candle magic with the full moon gives you a ritual for both clearing what no longer serves and charging up your next intention.

How to Perform a Full Moon Candle Ritual

  1. Create Sacred Space
Cleanse your space with smoke, essential oils, or salt. Turn off distractions and ground yourself with a few deep breaths.

  2. Anoint the Candle (optional but powerful)
Rub your candle with a carrier oil (like jojoba or coconut) and add a drop or two of essential oils aligned with your intention. For example:

    • Lavender: calm, trust, divine timing

    • Frankincense: spiritual connection

    • Rosemary: clarity, memory, release

    • Ylang Ylang or Rose: heart-opening

  3. Write Your Release or Intention
On a piece of paper, write down what you are ready to let go of—or what you are ready to illuminate or call in. You can do both: one for release, one for manifestation.

  4. Light Your Candle with Intention
As you light the candle, speak your intention aloud. Watch the flame and allow yourself to enter a meditative state. Visualize the energy of your intention being carried up with the smoke, fueled by the fire.

  5. Burn or Bury Your Paper
If you feel called, safely burn your paper in a fire-safe bowl or bury it under the light of the full moon as an offering.

  6. Let the Candle Burn Down (Safely)
Allow your candle to burn out completely, if possible, or burn it over several nights. Each time you return to it, reconnect to your original intention.

You Are the Magic

Remember: the most powerful ingredient in any ritual is you. Your presence, your breath, your willingness to show up—this is what activates the candle, the moon, and the sacred alchemy of transformation.

Under the full moon, you are illuminated. You are supported. You are held.
